The Friuli earthquake of 1976

To mark the 50th anniversary of the Friuli earthquake of 1976, the Italian Civil Protection Department and the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region are launching a special edition of the comic book series “L’attimo decisivo – The Decisive Moment.” “The Orcolat’s Roar” offers an original interpretation of the earthquake of May 6, 1976, combining elements of comic book storytelling with Friulian folk traditions and historical images from the period.
The comic book is an educational tool designed to support teachers in civic education, history, and natural science classes, and to promote, on the anniversary of the earthquake, group reading sessions focused on key topics such as historical memory, the development of the civil protection system in Italy, seismic risk, and the actions to take to prevent or mitigate the effects of an earthquake.
This page features two video lessons that explore these topics in greater depth. The first focuses on the contribution of Giuseppe Zamberletti to the emergency and, more broadly, to the civil protection system, while the second is dedicated to the seismicity of Friuli Venezia Giulia and its earthquake history. Finally, the video “Samira’s tips on earthquakes” explains the correct actions to take during an earthquake.
Giuseppe Zamberletti is considered the father of Italian civil protection. This video tells his story, beginning with his early days managing the emergency response after the Friuli earthquake.
This video, with a more technical and scientific focus, analyzes the events in Friuli and their effects.

Friuli is a highly seismic region of Italy. For this reason, knowing how to act before, during, and after an earthquake is essential. After reading the comic book in class, we recommend watching this short clip in which Samira, one of the main characters from the series “L'attimo decisivo - The decisive moment,” explains what to do in the event of an earthquake.
